Former Halo Studios art director, other employees, accuse studio of harassment and retaliation

Former Halo Infinite art director Glenn Israel, a longtime veteran of the flagship Xbox franchise, is spurring new accusations of harassment and retaliation at developer Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries). In a two-part post on LinkedIn, Israel accused Microsoft of covering up allegations of "unethical and/or unlawful acts committed by senior Halo Studios representatives" that included blacklisting, fraud, and harassment. He wrote that this harassment took place from January 2024 to June 2025.

Israel claims even though he filed formal complaints with Microsoft's human resources division in June 2025, the company made no meaningful investigation. This allegedly led to several senior studio representatives executing "a four-day-long act of harassment" intended to manufacture cause for Israel's termination in July 2025. He says the "catastrophic mismanagement" of development on Halo: Campaign Evolved led to his art team being reassigned from the unannounced game he had been working on in August 2025, and his role declared "redundant" as a result.

Responding to questions from Game Developer, Israel confirmed this redundancy was the cause of his October departure from Halo Studios, and said that he only signed his severance agreement after it apparently became clear that the ongoing HR investigations into his complaints "were a sham."

The allegations from the 17-year Halo veteran prompted other former employees to publicly make similar accusations on social media. One former producer claimed they'd spoken with some in studio leadership who "wanted to fire every single artist," another said they were "bullied out of their job" by leadership for "telling the truth about what was going on."

"Halo equals harassment and retaliation," said one former business executive partner. "I witnessed it and it happened to me too." Israel said he did not witness the incidents alluded to by these other individuals, however he has "no reason to doubt their claims."

"I witnessed similar experiences within the studio art department often...these instances were my impetus to begin formally gathering evidence," he told Game Developer.

An Xbox spokesperson referred Game Developer to a statement provided to Windows Central that states the company does not comment on "individual employee issues."

"We do take all claims seriously for both current and former employees," they added.

Halo Studios leadership faced other mismanagement allegations in 2023

Israel is not the first to accuse Halo Studios leadership of mismanagement. After Microsoft let go of many developers in a 10,000-person company-wide layoff in 2023, several former employees took to X to blame Halo Infinite's soft commercial performance on studio leaders and Microsoft.

"The layoffs at 343 shouldn't have happened and Halo Infinite should be in a better state," said former multiplayer designer Patrick Wren at the time. "The reason for both of those things is incompetent leadership up top during Halo Infinite development causing massive stress on those working hard to make Halo the best it can be."

Many high-level Halo Studios executives and veterans exited the company In the run-up to those 2023 layoffs, including studio founder Bonnie Ross, franchise director Frank O'Connor, and returning creative lead Joseph Staten. It's unknown if these and other high-profile individuals who left in this time period were among the group singled out for allegedly mismanaging the studio.

Israel's description of his final days at Halo Studios is especially bitter when you consider his long run with the series. Israel joined original Halo developer Bungie in 2008 as a concept artist and stuck with Microsoft after Bungie spun off into an independent company in 2012.

Update 4/6: This story has been updated with the proper name of 343 Industries.
