The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earns $747M at global box office
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which had a theatrical release in the US on April 1, has earned $747 million at the global box office.
The news comes via Deadline. The total figure is divided into $355.2 million domestic and $392.2 million overseas. As pointed out by the publication, this means that the franchise — a joint production by Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal — has surpassed the $2 billion total mark.
Its predecessor, the Super Mario Bros. Movie, earned an estimated $1.35 billion at the box office and attracted around 170 million viewers.
Despite the sequel faring pretty well so far, the film co-producer and Nintendo veteran, Shigeru Miyamoto, is finding the criticism "quite baffling," according to a Famitsu interview translated by VGC.
At the time of writing, the film has a 43 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, aggregating over 200 reviews.
"It really is quite baffling: here we are—having crossed over from a different field—working hard with the specific aim of helping to revitalize the film industry, yet the very people who ought to be championing that cause seem to be the ones taking a passive stance," Miyamoto said.
