Wildgate developer Moonshot Games confirms layoffs

访客15小时前news501

Wildgate developer Moonshot Games has made layoffs after the project failed to become sustainable following its launch in July 2025.

In a statement to Game Developer, Moonshot parent company and Wildgate publisher Dreamhaven explained the title received a bump in players after launching on the Epic Game Store in January 2026, but noted current player counts simply cannot sustain the size of the development team.

As a result, an undisclosed number of Moonshot employees have been laid off. A Dreamhaven spokesperson said this will allow the studio to continue supporting the game.

"In early January 2026, Wildgate launched on the Epic Games Store, where it was well-received by new and returning players. It was great to see so many crew up on Discord, share tips and stories, and enjoy their time with one another in the Reach," reads a statement issued to Game Developer.

"Despite the increase in player numbers and overall positive reception, it wasnt enough to sustain the size of our development team. So we made the difficult decision to reduce team roles to ensure we can continue delivering updates to the game while working in a way that supports the studio in the long term. We remain focused on Wildgate's next content update, which introduces more quality of life improvements, including the highly-requested progression system, which we anticipate coming later this quarter."

Dreamhaven confirms second round of layoffs in five months

Dreamhaven was established by Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime in 2020 and owns two development studios: Moonshot Games and Secret Door.

Since its inception, the company has published titles including Mechabellum, Lynked: Banner of the Spark, Sunderfolk, and Wildgate—with the latter two being developed by Secret Door and Moonshot, respectively.

In September last year, Dreamhaven confirmed a round of layoffs that primarily impacted its publishing team. In a statement issued at the time, Morhaime said the company was "facing similar challenges" to others in the game industry and confirmed it would be providing separation packages, benefits coverage, and career transition support.

"Looking ahead, our mission remains unchanged: bringing players together through positive and meaningful experiences. Wildgate, Sunderfolk, Lynked, and Mechabellum each reflect that vision, and we are committed to supporting these games and the communities forming around them," he added.
