Report: Bluepoint shuttered after pitching Bloodborne remake and other PlayStation spinoffs

Bloomberg is reporting that Bluepoint Games was shuttered by parent company Sony after failing to secure a project for over a year.

The Austin-based studio, known for working on well-received remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, was acquired by Sony in 2021. Now, around five years later, the studio is being torched after reportedly struggling to carve out a place for itself within PlayStation Studios.

Bluepoint had been working on a live service title set in the God of War universe until 2025, when the project was scrapped by Sony. At the time, the PlayStation maker said it would work closely with Bluepoint to determine its next steps.

Yet, it seems that decision was ultimately the beginning of the end for Bluepoint, which according to Bloomberg had been eager to produce original titles after cutting its teeth on remakes while also working as a support studio.

Following the cancellation of its God of War project, Bluepoint reportedly pitched a Bloodborne remake to Sony. There was, however, a snag. Although the numbers made sense from a business perspective, Bloodborne developer FromSoftware reportedly vetoed the move. Bluepoint was left treading water once again.

People familiar with the situation told Bloomberg that Bluepoint subsequently pitched an updated version of Shadow of the Colossus, which it previously remade in 2018. That idea was knocked back by Sony.

The studio then purportedly began approaching other PlayStation Studios with spinoff ideas, such as a new title set in the world of Ghost of Tsushima. Those proposals were never greenlit. Other Sony-owned studios were also under pressure, and according to Bloomberg were reluctant to dedicate resources to another team's project.

By this stage, Bluepoint had been staring at the drawing board for over a year. Staff purportedly felt that when Sony announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy in February without Bluepoint's involvement, the writing was on the wall. The Japanese company shuttered the studio one week later.
